The America which is gradually evolving to better suit the worker is the country which Father arrives to (from his polar explorations) and has dreaded; as Father sails on the Roosevelt, he sees a passing boat filled with immigrants, â€Å"a rag ship with a million dark eyes staring at him. Father, a normally resolute person, suddenly foundered in his soul. A weird despair seized him† (Doctorow 12). Father’s 19th-century dream for America, although not entirely racist or immigration-opposed, is fearful of the American Dream which is being executed by revolutionary immigrants such as Tateh. Suddenly, the two opposing views for the ideal America create an ambiguous, vague, and entirely subjective definition of the â€Å"American Dream.† By the year of 1909, the America with which Father was so enamored and fascinated had been characterized by grandiose, flagrant expressions of wealth and large quantities, especially of food. Affluent individuals such as Pierpont Morgan â€Å"would routinely consume seven- and eight-course dinners†¦ The consumption of food was a sacrament of success† (Doctorow 69). Rich men who had attained the very success which the American Dream guarantees were demonized for their gluttonous lifestyles, and gained a certain reputation as â€Å"selfish† and â€Å"rapacious.† Anarchists (of whom Tateh was a devout follower), envious of the American Dream which had supposedly suppressed theirs, even â€Å"barged into [Henry Clay] Frick’s office in Pittsburgh and shot the bastard three times. In the neck, in the shoulder† (Doctorow 51). Tateh’s American Dream, gravely affected by the American labor movement setback caused by the failed attempted assassina tion of Carnegie Steel’s Chairman ten years earlier, upon arrival in the Lower East Side, becomes focused on his daughter’s future well-being as opposed to his present one. Father, on the other hand, is obstinate in his belief that the American Dream lies buried deep in the past—happiness and success will come from the ‘primitive’ system of the government, social hierarchy, and workplace. The commencement of the 20th century proved to a transitioning point for the ever-changing, ever-transforming American Dream which granted many the opportunity to possess a differing perspective about the country in which they wanted to cry, rejoice, and reside. Men such as Father developed an antique, patriotic, and nostalgic philosophy which tainted the American Dream with a 19th-century essence that was isolationist, traditional, and industrious. Antithetically, individuals such as Tateh zealously fought for an American Dream which was concealed within the progressive, futuristic era of an unknown millennium. Although the American Dream symbolized the final destiny of the thousands of immigrants who docked at the shores of Ellis Island and today, still continue to arrive at America’s borders, it also represented the tendencies of many to find individual happiness which was thought to have vanished into American history. The objectives and desires of one’s lifetime in the United States differed among the millions of Americans who were both foreign and domestic, but were always part of one single, all-encompassing—American Dream.

The Movie â€Å"Radio† is said to be based on a true story, and although most of the story was true, there were quite a lot of differences between the movie and real life events. There were changes that had to be made simply because of the time period that the movie was set in. There were things that had to be left out or condensed in order to keep the story short enough to make it into a film. There were also events added that did not actually happen but were used to create a more exciting movie. Many things needed to be changed slightly to make filming easier. One change was the location. Although Anderson, South Carolina was the real town, It looked too modern so it was decided to use another South Carolina town called Walterboro. Walterboro still had an older feel to it and required less work to make it look like 1976, when the film was set. The film makers had the same sort of problem when choosing a school. The real High school, T L Hanna HS in Anderson had also been modernized, and even the high school in Walterboro looked a bit too modern. It was decided to split filming between a local elementary school and The University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie and a few other local stadiums. The effect was a realistic sixties and seventies look. Achieving this look would have been very expensive in Hollywood. Personal Statement on Child Development - Developmental Psychology

My fascination with childhood development has grown out of my on-going studies in the area of psychology.   Due to be graduating from the University of Athens this summer, having completed my studies in Psychology from the department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology, I am keen to continue my studies by undertaking a MSc in Developmental Psychology.   To me, it seems like a natural choice as I enjoy working with children and find my experiences with them to have been amongst the most rewarding of my life.   I have also successfully completed a number of courses at The Institute of Behaviour Research and Therapy including Acquaintance Course in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy and Acquaintance Course in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy of Children and Adolescence.   Through these courses, my interest in developmental psychology grew exponentially and I feel that the choice of these courses also demonstrates my commitment to this subject. My interest in developmental psychology revolves around a number of key areas including the biological contributions to development and also individual differences in development particularly in relation to external contributions.   By this, I mean the impact of environmental, genetic, parental and post-natal factors.   It fascinates me how children are all created and born in (largely) the same way and through the same means of procreation and yet each and every one of us develops into a different person with an individual appearance and personality.   I am captivated by the different theories and considerations as to why this happens.   In the same vein, I am fascinated by the genetic differences that we experience and have explored this through my volunteer work in the last six months with the charity, Cerebral Palsy Greece.   I believe that my enthusiasm for this area can only continue to grow as it has done already – in leaps and bounds.

One of the most well-known Supreme Cases involving student rights was the Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District decision of 1969. The verdict quickly became a precedent for many other decisions involving school issues and is very relevant today. In December of 1965, students attending Des Moines Public Schools held a meeting at Christopher Eckhardt s house to conduct a plan to show their support for a truce in the ongoing Vietnam War. They resolved to wear black armbands during the holiday season and also to fast on December 16 and on New Years. The principals at the school received word of the plan, and on December 14, they established a policy that banned armbands in school. Anyone who refused to remove the armband at a teacher’s request would be suspended. However, this did not deter Mary Beth Tinker and Christopher Eckhardt, who, on December 16, wore their armbands and were sent home. The underlying reasons why there was a split, however, developed in earliest beginnings of the Church. All products and contracts follow Islamic principles that conventional financial systems do not, such as interest and risk sharing, and uncertainty. The Anatomy and Actions of the Knee Essay -- essays research papers

The knee joint is formed by the articulation of the distal end of the femur and the proximal end of the tibia. The fibula is only involved to the extent that it serves as an attachment site for connective tissue. In this paper, the anatomy of the joint will be discussed. The knee is a hinge-type, diarthrotic, or freely moveable joint. Also referred to as a synovial joint, the 2 articulating ends of bone are encased in a capsule that lubricates the joint with synovial fluid to reduce friction. Each bone in a synovial joint has articular cartilage at the articulating surface. The C-shaped medial and lateral menisci serve to deepen the articulation at the superior surface of the tibia, thus enhancing the bony stability of the joint. Also adding to the joints stability are the two major pairs of ligaments: the cruciates and the collaterals. The medial and lateral collateral ligaments have a stabilizing effect in a lateral plane of motion, helping to prevent sideward displacement and over-rotation. The medial collateral attaches the femur to the tibia, also attaching to the medial meniscus. The lateral collateral attaches the femur to the fibula but has no attachment to the lateral meniscus. Both collaterals lie slightly posterior to the lateral axis of the knee joint and are taut when the knee is full extension. This positioning of the ligaments causes a slackness when flexion occurs, allowing medial and lateral rotation to take place. The cruciate ligaments are so named because of their cross-configuration within the joint. The anterior cruciate ligament attaches to the tibia on its anterior-superior surface, crossing through the joint from the medial side to its lateral attachment on the femur. The posterior cruciate ligament attaches on the posterior-superior aspect of the tibia, crossing diagonally and medially to its lateral attachment on the femur. The anterior and posterior cruciates protect against hyperextension and hyperflexion, respectively. The actions performed at the knee include flexion, extension, and medial and lateral rotation. Flexion is the bending of a joint so that the angle between the two bones decreases. The primary muscles that flex the knee are a group collectively known as â€Å"hamstrings.† The hamstrings consist of the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, semimembranosus.
